After finding success in Hollywood, he eventually connected with Allan Savory, a pioneer in regenerative agriculture. This led to a transformative trip to Zimbabwe, where he documented Savory’s efforts to restore degraded land.

“It shifted my life forever,” Somerhalder noted about the experience.

In collaboration with Josh and Rebecca Tickell, Somerhalder worked on a series of documentaries focusing on regenerative agriculture. “Groundswell,” released as part of this trilogy, followed the successful “Kiss the Ground” and “Common Ground.” These films raised awareness about sustainable farming practices.

Somerhalder’s initial footage from Zimbabwe became a foundation for “Kiss the Ground,” igniting renewed interest in sustainable agriculture. He believes these projects have influenced agricultural history in America.

Life on the Farm

Somerhalder and his wife Nikki Reed live a life centered around sustainability on their shared farm. Reed, known for her role in “Twilight,” shares Somerhalder’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

“She is an amazing human, like this earth goddess,” Somerhalder said of Reed.
