A man has been taken to the hospital after being shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Austin, Texas. This incident occurred on Sunday, according to local officials.
In a video interview with local news outlet KVUE, Austin City Council Member Mike Siegel reported information from a witness. “An ICE vehicle allegedly boxed in a civilian vehicle, sideswiped it, and then an ICE officer shot the driver,” Siegel mentioned. He also noted the presence of two bullet holes in the back of the civilian vehicle and said the individual was transported to the hospital about an hour after the shooting.
The authorities have not yet provided details about the condition of the person shot or the circumstances leading up to the incident. Siegel emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation, stating, “This needs to be properly investigated. It’s essentially a federal crime scene, but city police should also be involved to ensure transparency and public confidence in the investigation.”
Officials are planning a press conference to share more information at 4 p.m. local time. Video footage shared on social media appears to depict an ICE agent exiting a black vehicle with a weapon and approaching a blue car. A man is visible in the driver’s seat of the blue vehicle with the door open, and the car shows damage on the passenger side.
When contacted for questions, the Austin Police Department directed Newsweek to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), while Newsweek reached out to DHS on Sunday seeking further details.
Democratic Representative Greg Casar addressed the incident on social media, stating, “The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning.” He called for “a full, independent investigation, immediate release of body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law.” Casar also criticized ICE, alleging repeated dishonesty in past shootings, and encouraged peaceful protest against ICE’s actions.
Texas state Representative Vikki Goodwin, Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, mentioned on social media that another “ICE-related shooting” had occurred in North Austin, with the victim hospitalized. She confirmed that Austin police were managing traffic at the scene and that more information would be forthcoming.
This shooting is among at least a dozen involving federal agents since President Donald Trump began his second term in 2025. The situation is developing, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
