ICE has apprehended Giovana Mercedes Moreno Ochompy, associated with a triple murder tied to the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, after Chicago police released her without informing ICE. Tom Homan, former ICE director, criticizes these sanctuary city policies, arguing they obstruct federal law enforcement and place public safety at risk.
In another case, Roberts Nemiro, a former contestant on Latvia’s ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ was arrested in San Francisco for overstaying his visa and accumulating a criminal history, including aggravated assault and drug offenses. ICE detained Nemiro following a referral from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, citing his expired visa from 2012.
According to DHS, Nemiro holds convictions for aggravated assault with a gun and disorderly conduct. He also faced arrests for sexual battery and drug possession. DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis described Nemiro’s criminal transformation from a TV dancer to a habitual offender.
Despite California’s sanctuary state status, ICE successfully arrested Nemiro, showcasing ongoing federal efforts to enforce immigration laws despite state policies. These cases underscore the ongoing conflict between federal immigration enforcement and sanctuary city policies.
