Currently, around 2,800 National Guard members from D.C. and other Republican-governed states are deployed within the city. Unlike other deployments, Trump controls the D.C. National Guard. The study noted a 24% drop in opportunistic crimes like property thefts, yet no impact on violent crimes, which had been decreasing even before Trump’s policy. Researchers described the Guard’s presence as an “expensive instrument” providing a significant visual impact on street safety.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, maintaining current troop levels costs roughly $1.5 million daily. Co-author Richard Hahn remarks that the deployment shows partial success, yet thoughtful policing could yield better results at lower costs.

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson dismissed the study’s significance, claiming the presence improved quality of life without citing data. The exact timeline for the summer surge’s conclusion or troop reduction remains undetermined. Task force officials have not clarified the schedule when asked about the operation’s duration.
