Impact of Rising Fuel Prices on Recreational Boating Amid Global Conflict

3 weeks ago 0

On a warm afternoon in Dexter Township, Michigan, Malik Amine and his brother prepared their family’s pontoon boat for the summer season. Portage Lake glistened under the sun as the brothers faced a decision on the amount of gasoline to fuel the boat’s 52-gallon engine. The ongoing conflict in Iran has affected fuel costs for both motorists and recreational boaters. Though U.S. gas prices have slightly decreased, a gallon of regular gas still averages 34% higher than a year ago, according to AAA. Diesel fuel prices have also risen by 53% compared to last year.

Ethanol-free gas, preferred by many boaters, classic car owners, and lawn mower users, costs an additional 20 cents to $1 per gallon above regular fuel. The National Association of Convenience Stores reports that a nearby station, 60 miles west of Detroit, sells ethanol-free fuel for $7 per gallon. Amine plans a cautious approach to fuel his boat ahead of Memorial Day weekend, acknowledging that costs are significantly higher than last year. “It’s smarter to fill as needed,” Amine remarked, uncertain of when the conflict might end.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association records that 100 million Americans engage in boating annually, contributing to a $230 billion industry. Despite high fuel prices, many boaters intend to continue their water activities this year, although some plans are affected. Ellen Bradley from the association notes changes in behavior, with boaters choosing shorter, slower trips or spending more time anchored.

Neil and Kathleen Donohoe live aboard a 50-foot diesel-powered boat named Granuaile, after a famous Irish pirate queen. Although maintenance is usually their biggest expense, fuel costs for their 1,500-gallon capacity vessel have escalated. They rely on other boaters and marine apps to find the cheapest fuel prices, impacting their cruising habits for the summer.

Boating-related businesses are also experiencing effects from rising fuel costs. Seattle Sailing Club reports a 10.7% increase in fuel expenses since the conflict began. Despite relying primarily on wind power, their boats use gas or diesel backup engines. The club’s marina raised diesel prices from $6.50 to $7.99 per gallon in May. The club fears potential impacts on business if fuel prices remain high.

Melissa Kunnert, owner of NautiMi On the River near Portage Lake, offers party rentals and cruises on a tiki-themed pontoon boat without raising prices despite increased fuel costs. She is curious whether rising travel expenses might encourage more local customers to use her services.

In Traverse City, Michigan, Robert Hinds added a $50 fuel surcharge to the fishing trips he offers as the owner of Central Coast Angling. With the need to fuel both his truck and boat, Hinds has faced several cancellations from customers reconsidering their travel plans. He decided against a fishing trip to Wisconsin due to the prohibitive $400 diesel fuel cost.
