An event at President Donald Trump’s California golf course resulted in the arrest of an armed man on August 2. Reports state that the individual had the first lady’s schedule along with details about U.S. Secret Service (USSS) personnel.
The man, identified as Jeanine John Taele, 38, was found with over 200 pages of writings that included schedules for Melania Trump and members of the president’s USSS detail. During a Los Angeles County court hearing, the Associated Press reported these findings. The writings also had sketches and lists related to Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Prosecutors revealed that Taele had seven notebooks filled with 208 pages of drawings and sketches. There were also lists of USSS schedules and specific information about the security personnel, alongside Melania Trump’s schedule. The writings included instructions on how to live “off the grid,” furthering the concern.
Los Angeles County Judge John Lonergan Jr. expressed alarm at the situation, calling it a troubling case in current times marked by political tension and violence.
This case itself is alarming in this day and age with the violence that is creeping into our everyday lives, especially with our partisanship in the political environment.
The judge suspended the criminal proceedings after a preliminary evaluation indicated that Taele was not mentally fit to stand trial. Consequently, the case was transferred to a mental health court.
Taele, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was arrested after federal agents noticed him taking photographs and videos while appearing to monitor security-planning activities ahead of the president’s visit. Authorities found a magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition in his pocket. A search of his vehicle also uncovered a pistol with a round in the chamber and another magazine filled with similar ammunition.
Further investigation at Taele’s residence in Downey led to the recovery of an illegally modified rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, radio signal devices, and additional concerning notebooks. The investigation involves the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, USSS, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Taele’s public defender, A.J. Bayne, urged caution in interpreting his client’s motives. Highlighting Taele’s service in the military, Bayne pointed out that assumptions could be misleading.
He’s a veteran, he served our country…
The Secret Service emphasized that they thoroughly investigate any potential threats toward individuals under their protection, although they did not comment on the specifics of this case. Jeanine John Taele will remain in custody until a hearing on September 9 at Hollywood Mental Health Court.
