Inspired by Disney: A Mom’s Library Transformation

Erika Mathews, a 38-year-old mother of two, embarked on an impressive home renovation inspired by the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast. After much deliberation, Mathews decided to transform a spare room in her Colorado home into her dream library.

Mathews shared her thoughts with Newsweek, expressing her long-standing love for reading. In her middle and high school years, she often devoured mystery novels, including works by Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie.

Once I decided this room would be a library, it only made sense to get inspiration from Beauty and the Beast, Mathews said, recalling her affection for the film since childhood.

The transformation began with clearing out old designs. Mathews removed popcorn ceilings, wallpaper, and flooring to prepare the space. She then built shelves and created an artificial fireplace. Notably, a stained-glass window with a red rose became a focal point, echoing the film’s iconic design.

Mathews described how challenging certain aspects of the renovation were. The most challenging projects were the ceiling wallpaper and the gold leaf on the molding, she said. Over two months, she dedicated her weekends to the project, spending around $5,000 overall.

The journey, documented on her Instagram (@the.elm.house), captivated viewers. With each video post gaining substantial attention, the anticipation for the final reveal grew.

Mathews ensured every detail aligned with her vision. From the gold chandelier to the elegant moldings, each element was thoughtfully included. As a finishing touch, she donned a yellow lace gown and incorporated a candelabra and an antique clock, completing the library’s transformation.

Now that the project is finished, Mathews looks forward to enjoying her collection of antique books in the newly renovated room. My antique book collection still has a special place in my heart, and I hope to have more time soon to slow down and curl up with a good book, she shared.
