Investigation into Alleged Influence Networks Linked to Cuba

1 month ago 0

This article is the third installment in a Fox News Digital investigative series examining claims related to the Communist Party of Cuba’s alleged influence networks. These networks reportedly operate through nonprofits, activist organizations, and political delegations.

Sanctions and Responses

When President Donald Trump increased sanctions on Cuba, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker sought guidance from his friend David Adler. Following their discussion, Piker became involved in organizing a transnational convoy. This convoy brought activists and essential supplies to Cuba, branded as the ‘Nuestra América Convoy.’ This mission aimed to deliver approximately 40 tons of aid to the island.

Investigation Overview

The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued administrative subpoenas as part of its investigation. Documents requested from Piker and CodePink’s co-founder Medea Benjamin include travel records and financial activities related to the convoy. These inquiries are part of a broader scrutiny of the convoy’s connection with Cuban entities and individuals.

Progressive International’s Role

Progressive International, coordinated by David Adler, is noted for its central role in the convoy’s organization. It is one of the many nonprofits mobilizing support for the Cuban government. This organization, along with others, generates a significant annual revenue, and they have pledged their assistance should the U.S. take military action against Cuba.

Links to Political Figures

Progressive International was founded in 2020 as an initiative by Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. Adler, who previously worked with Varoufakis and Sanders, now directs a nonprofit linked to Progressive International.

Cuban Connections

Adler’s connections with Cuban authorities are highlighted by his previous support from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. This connection exemplifies the relationship between the convoy’s organizers and the Cuban government. Adler, a Jewish American, has participated in various international activism efforts supporting similar causes.

Convoy Details

The ‘Nuestra América Convoy’ in March 2026 was an extensive international operation involving hundreds of delegates and significant aid supplies. Hasan Piker, who often collaborated with ‘Belly of the Beast,’ documented the convoy, framing his involvement as journalistic.

Broader Network

Progressive International is part of a larger network involving several organizations with historical ties to Cuba. The network includes groups like the Venceremos Brigade, associated with past solidarity missions to Cuba. This convoy is part of an ongoing series of operations involving aid and political advocacy.

Ongoing Investigation

Federal investigators are examining potential communications and financial ties to Cuban entities, focusing on the broader network rather than individual political expressions. The scrutiny relates to ensuring compliance with federal regulations regarding travel and financial activities connected to Cuba.
