In Tucson, Arizona, investigators are working on solving the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Six months into the investigation, Sheriff Chris Nanos disclosed that a hair sample recovered from her home failed to provide a DNA profile. He spoke with Fox News Digital, discussing the ongoing efforts and challenges in the case.
Authorities sent the hair sample to a California lab for further DNA testing with the FBI’s assistance. Although no DNA was detected, Nanos emphasized that the hair sample could still hold significance. It remains preserved for future analysis.
Guthrie, 84, is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, a co-host of the ‘Today’ show. She has been missing since February 1, 2026. Sheriff Nanos explained that the investigation involves more than just this hair sample. Multiple crime labs are involved in analyzing various pieces of evidence collected from the scene.
“Anything we can grasp onto with DNA is a part of this investigation,”
Nanos mentioned that they are incorporating investigative genetic genealogy to build a family tree that could generate new leads. This technique utilizes DNA technology to identify potential suspects.
A reward exceeding $1.2 million remains available for information leading to an arrest. Both the investigators and Guthrie’s family, including Savannah, appeal to the public for tips to assist in the case.
The Guthrie family is hopeful for a breakthrough. Encouragingly, a suspect was caught on Guthrie’s home security camera. He is estimated to be 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a medium build, and was wearing a mask, long sleeves, gloves, and carrying a black Ozark Trail backpack.
