Iowa Hawkeyes Secure Last-Second Victory Against Michigan

4 days ago 0

In an intense game at Michigan Stadium, the Iowa Hawkeyes capitalized on their final chance to clinch a narrow victory over Michigan. Iowa’s quarterback, Hank Brown, delivered a decisive 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired, securing a 20-19 win for No. 17 Iowa against No. 18 Michigan.

Brown expressed his elation, saying, “To be able to silence a stadium like that, there’s no greater feeling.” The game-winning drive covered 91 yards and was propelled by an unnecessary roughness penalty against Michigan on a crucial third down near midfield. A key 29-yard completion from Brown to Addison Ostrenga set up Vander Zee’s touchdown with just two seconds on the clock.

“We prep for situations like these throughout the week in practice,” Brown stated. “Why do you prepare for it? For a moment like that.”

Despite the recent controversy involving Michigan’s previous matchup with Western Michigan, where clock management issues left many confused, Brown chose not to comment on whether Iowa’s win was a form of justice for Western Michigan.

Michigan’s quarterback, Bryce Underwood, connected twice with JJ Buchanan for touchdowns. However, the Wolverines struggled to maintain control of the game. Coach Kyle Whittingham noted, “We would’ve liked to run the clock out. That was disappointing.”

Iowa initially took the lead in the fourth quarter with Brown’s 16-yard pass to Vander Zee. Underwood’s subsequent touchdown pass to Buchanan reclaimed the lead for Michigan at 19-14. However, their two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Late in the game, Iowa faced a fourth-and-6 situation at the Michigan 28 after a false start penalty. Coach Kirk Ferentz opted for a 51-yard field goal attempt by Caden Buhr, which sailed wide right with 2:33 remaining.

Looking ahead, Iowa will continue its Big Ten schedule with a challenging road game against Ohio State, while Michigan will seek to rebound in an away game against Minnesota.
