TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has halted discussions with the United States as a reaction to Israel’s intensified military activities in Lebanon. This move aligns with reports from government-affiliated media.
According to the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, “Due to the ongoing actions of the Zionist regime in Lebanon and considering that Lebanon was a precondition of the ceasefire, which has now been breached on all fronts, the Iranian negotiating team will suspend ‘talks and the exchange of texts through mediators.’”
Civil defense workers were seen inspecting the aftermath of an Israeli strike in Tyre, a southern city in Lebanon, highlighting the intensity on the ground.
Recently, the U.S. military and Iran were engaged in exchanges of strikes from the weekend into Monday. This latest violence arose amid a supposed ceasefire, which began in early April. Tasnim mentioned that the Iranian government is contemplating a complete shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic route, pivotal for global oil transport, previously carried one-fifth of the world’s oil supply before the conflict. The move aims to penalize Israel and its allies.
Although no formal governmental statements have been released, often the media disseminates official information. U.S. officials have not immediately provided comments regarding the situation.
The conflict originated on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel initiated a war that has resulted in thousands of casualties, predominantly in Iran and Lebanon, including 13 American service members. The confrontation has consequently escalated global energy prices due to Iran’s drastic action of practically closing the Strait of Hormuz.
Discussions for a wider agreement were in progress, despite disputes over issues such as the future of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. This is an ongoing story, and updates will follow as new information emerges.
