Iran-U.S. Tensions Escalate with Strikes on Infrastructure

4 weeks ago 0

Iran and the United States intensified hostilities as the U.S. military targeted Iranian bridges, rail lines, and a maritime observation tower. Verified social media images showed infrastructure damage in Hormozgan Province.

U.S. allies reported retaliatory strikes by Iran on neighboring countries hosting U.S. military bases. In Kuwait, power and water facilities were hit, raising concerns about civilian infrastructure becoming a target.

President Trump declared a cease-fire with Iran had ended over a week ago. Since then, daily attacks from both sides have continued, with Trump threatening destruction of civilian infrastructure to prompt a deal preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iranian officials warned they would strike civilian infrastructure in nearby countries.

Generally, civilian infrastructure like water treatment plants are not seen as legitimate military targets, and attacking them could constitute a war crime, according to legal scholars. However, strikes on railroads and bridges might serve military purposes if they facilitate the transport of troops or weapons.

U.S. Central Command, responsible for American forces in the Middle East, confirmed strikes on Iran for the seventh consecutive night without detailing targets. Explosions were reported in Sirik, a port city hosting Iranian naval bases, previously targeted by U.S. attacks.

Earlier strikes hit Iranian military targets including coastal surveillance, air defense sites, and military logistics, according to Central Command. The destruction of a port surveillance tower used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps to monitor commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was part of the operations.
