Irish Prime Minister Defends Stance on Israel Amid Soccer Dispute and Calls for Peace

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has responded to claims of antisemitism in Ireland’s criticism of Israel as tensions mounted over a politically charged soccer match between the nations.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Martin emphasized Ireland’s commitment to peace and humanitarian aid in Gaza. He criticized Israel’s military response as ‘absolutely disproportionate’ and urged a change in strategy. Martin drew on Ireland’s history of resolving conflict in Northern Ireland to bolster its position in international peace efforts.

Regarding anti-Israel sentiment, Martin stated, ‘For the vast majority of people, it does not cross into antisemitism. We have no toleration for antisemitism, none.’

The issue gained further prominence during a UEFA Nations League match, where Irish players held a vote on whether to boycott the fixture against Israel. Despite pressure from sports figures and public debate, a majority voted to proceed, though one player opted out.

Martin condemned Hamas’ October 7 attack and affirmed Israel’s right to security, advocating for a peaceful coexistence along the lines of a two-state solution.

‘We believe in a two-state solution. Israel has the right to exist in security, and Palestinians should have the right to live peacefully in their homeland,’ Martin said.

Ireland has seen strong pro-Palestinian sentiment, spurred by historical parallels and a sense of justice. Martin highlighted the need for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, citing the severe conditions for its 2 million residents.

The soccer match involved complex dynamics, including protests and diplomatic tensions. Irish officials voted to fulfill the game fixtures after warning of financial losses and sanctions from UEFA. Protests against the matches included organized campaigns like #StopTheGame.

Martin resisted calls for boycotts of Israel, arguing it could prove ‘self-defeating’ and harm Irish soccer without affecting Israel.

Antisemitism concerns have been present, with groups like the American Jewish Committee expressing fears that it is ‘pervasive’ in Ireland. Martin pointed out Ireland’s engagement in combating antisemitism and the contributions of Jewish communities in Ireland.

Delivering a speech at the United Nations, Martin sharply criticized Israel’s conduct, accusing the international community of failing Palestine.

‘The truth in Gaza, once fully known, will shame the world,’ Martin stated.

Martin emphasized Ireland’s role as a peacemaker, positioned through its experience in Northern Ireland and leadership in the European Union. He recalled personal encounters with figures promoting peace between Israelis and Palestinians as inspirational.

Beyond Israel, Martin also addressed Ireland’s neutral stance in Russia’s war on Ukraine, rejecting territorial concessions and advocating for diplomatic solutions. Ireland provides humanitarian aid to Ukraine without compromising its military neutrality.

Martin’s vision includes support for Irish reunification with Northern Ireland, advocating for trust-building between communities. U.S. involvement, historically critical in peace, may play a role in future reunification processes.
