Jaclyn Smith on Love and Life Beyond Hollywood

1 week ago 0

Jaclyn Smith found love not in the glitz of Hollywood, but in the hospital room where her father was treated. The actress, known for her role as Kelly Garrett in “Charlie’s Angels” from 1976 to 1981, details her life in her memoir, “I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie.” In it, Smith shares her experiences with her fourth husband, Dr. Brad Allen, whom she lived apart from for 17 of their 35 years together.

Smith’s relationship with Allen began when he performed her father’s heart surgery in 1991. Two years later, Allen moved to Chicago to work at the University of Illinois, where he stayed for 17 years while Smith remained in Los Angeles.

“The greatest love often arrives unexpectedly,” she commented in an interview. Allen impressed her with his genuine demeanor and kindness towards her parents, making a lasting impression.

After enduring three divorces, Smith approached love with caution. “Brad and I finally tied the knot in Los Angeles on Oct. 11, 1997,” she wrote. Her two children played roles in their wedding, with her daughter as the maid of honor and her son giving her away. The couple commuted for many years, marrying after seven years of knowing each other well, including understanding each other’s priorities.

For Smith, marriage was about more than falling in love; it involved building a shared life. She believes the true test lies in day-to-day living, beyond initial infatuation.

Smith faced a serious health challenge with Allen’s support, overcoming breast cancer with a lumpectomy and radiation in 2002. Her first husband, Roger Davis, proposed after only two dates, but their marriage ended due to infidelity.

Smith reflects on the importance of shared values and lessons learned from past relationships. She married actor Dennis Cole in 1978, but left him after discovering his infidelity with his son’s girlfriend. Her marriage to Anthony B. Richmond, whom she met in 1980, was strained by his substance abuse issues, leading her to prioritize her children’s well-being.

Reflecting on her journey, Smith acknowledges her strength and the unpredictable nature of life. Her focus on family remains her greatest priority, overcoming heartbreaks and maintaining dedication to her children.
