President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet at Gracie Mansion on Monday. This meeting will test a developing working relationship between the two leaders, despite their differing views on immigration and other major policies.
The relationship between Trump and Mamdani has seen both criticism and cooperation. They previously met at the Oval Office in February, focusing on housing in New York. However, policy disagreements persist. Mamdani has opposed Trump’s immigration policies, while Trump criticized Mamdani’s agenda.
“Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!” Trump commented after Governor Kathy Hochul’s new tax proposal, which Mamdani supported, was announced in April.
Mamdani, the socialist mayor-elect, first met Trump last November. Trump remarked that Mamdani might “surprise some conservative people” and expressed optimism about Mamdani’s success.
Their last meeting in February, noted for its cordiality, saw Mamdani seeking support for a major New York housing project. Despite political differences, Trump considered Mamdani “a nice guy” during his State of the Union speech.
The housing proposal, pitched during their February meeting, involves over $21 billion in federal grants for building affordable homes, along with facilities like parks, schools, and health clinics, generating union jobs.
Trump plans to visit New York City for the United Nations General Assembly. He will meet Mamdani before returning to Washington, where he will host Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state visit.
The leaders have strongly opposed each other on immigration enforcement. This conflict intensified after ICE arrested over 2,100 people in New York during “Operation Rotten Apple.” Mamdani’s administration joined a lawsuit against a new public-charge rule from Trump’s administration, rolling back Biden-era regulations.
“If you are a citizen or seeking asylum, these changes won’t affect you,” Mamdani reassured at a recent news conference.
Mamdani criticized the new rule for undermining established legal principles and creating fear to isolate immigrant New Yorkers.
Mamdani is expected to address the press following their meeting. Fox News Digital has contacted both the White House and Mamdani’s office for comments.
