James Talarico’s Senate Race Gains Momentum

3 weeks ago 0

James Talarico is showing stronger polling results in his Senate race against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton compared to Beto O’Rourke’s performance at a similar stage during the 2018 campaign against Senator Ted Cruz. Democrats have long aspired to secure a victory in Texas, but have faced repeated challenges. This year, however, the race is deemed a toss-up, heightening the possibility of a Democratic win.

James Talarico’s Chances of Beating Ken Paxton

A recent poll conducted by SoCal Strategies indicates Talarico leading Paxton with 50% of the vote, compared to Paxton’s 45%. This marks a reversal from June, when Paxton was leading according to the same pollster. Talarico has experienced notable gains among Hispanic voters, increasing the gap from 10 points in June to 38 points in the latest poll. Additionally, his support from independent voters rose from a 10-point lead to a 45-point margin.

Furthermore, 12% of Republican respondents express support for Talarico. The survey highlights that Republicans remain less decided than Democrats. Six percent of Trump supporters are currently undecided in the Senate race, compared to only one percent of Harris supporters.

“To have a chance, Paxton will need to win nearly all of these voters and to convert a substantial portion of the 12% of Republicans who say they would vote for Talarico if the election were held today,” the survey report noted.

Market prediction platforms have mirrored this shift in odds. On Polymarket, Talarico now holds a 53% chance of winning, as opposed to Paxton’s previously anticipated 56% odds in July. Kalshi reflects a similar adjustment, with Talarico forecasted to win with a 52% probability.

Beto O’Rourke’s Performance Against Ted Cruz in 2018

During the 2018 campaign, Cruz was ahead of O’Rourke by approximately three points according to a Real Clear Politics poll average. Cruz eventually won the election by two points. At the time, Cruz acknowledged O’Rourke’s efforts and recognized the narrow victory. Presently, Cruz cautions Republicans against the possibility of losing Texas.

In a recent podcast, Cruz expressed concern that Republicans “could lose Texas.” In a conversation with Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Sean Hannity’s radio show, Cruz maintained optimism about keeping Texas red, yet he noted the closeness of the race, estimating it to be a “1- or 2-point race.” Cruz also voiced apprehension to Sean Spicer, discussing the Senate’s competitive environment and highlighting Texas as a “very competitive” race. He predicted potential challenges for Republicans in the upcoming election.
