James Triantos Joins Cubs Roster for Pirates Series

3 weeks ago 0

Pittsburgh: On Friday afternoon, James Triantos stood on the field at PNC Park, taking in the surroundings moments before his pregame defensive session. Triantos, 23, was added to the Cubs’ roster from Triple A ahead of their series against the Pirates, replacing outfielder Kevin Alcántara who was optioned to Iowa.

Triantos expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s really cool. I’m grateful for the opportunity and want to compete. I have a dream to help win games and aim to put my best forward. I control my attitude and feel I have a good opportunity here.

The journey to his MLB call-up took several attempts. In Iowa’s team hotel in Georgia, Triantos missed multiple calls from manager Marty Pevey due to his phone being on silent. A hitting coach ultimately fetched him to Pevey’s room where Triantos learned he was called to the majors. He shared the news with his parents and roommate B.J. Murray.

About 15 friends and family plan to attend the game, hopeful to witness his debut. However, manager Craig Counsell indicated Triantos might get limited playtime within the current roster setup, similar to Alcántara’s situation.

As the No. 11 prospect, Triantos has played five positions in Iowa, but Counsell expects him to cover second base, third base, and left field. Despite limited at-bats, exposure to major-league play is seen as beneficial. “Everything is faster here, from the game itself to decisions. There’s different team languages, fostering accountability,” Counsell explained.

The Cubs’ strong position-playing group presents trade possibilities with prospects Triantos, Alcántara, and Pedro Ramírez as potential assets before the trade deadline. Discussions might include utilityman Matt Shaw, though his injury prevents activation.

Triantos focuses on seizing opportunities and winning games. “I’m just controlling what I can, staying present, and focusing on winning,” he asserted.
