Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Challenges on ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ and Acting Career Resurgence

Jeffrey Dean Morgan faced a tough period in his acting career due to his role as an alien on ‘Star Trek: Enterprise.’ Playing the character Damron, a Xindi alien, involved wearing heavy prosthetics. This experience was difficult for Morgan, leading him to consider leaving acting entirely.

In a conversation on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast with Josh Horowitz, Morgan described his struggles with claustrophobia while filming the series. He spent as much as 14 hours a day under layers of makeup, making eating and other simple tasks challenging. Morgan remarked, “I hated it so much. I still wake up sweating about it.”

“I was so claustrophobic,” Morgan shared. “It just was an experience that I want to forget.”

The role came during a challenging time in Morgan’s life. By his mid-30s, he had mostly worked on guest roles, pilots, and smaller films while supporting himself through side jobs like building fences. Navigating the uncertainty of his career, he was unsure of his next steps when contemplating leaving Hollywood.

Morgan lacked formal education and felt stuck without a clear backup plan. He recalled his longtime manager dropping him, stating that he had “aged out” of Hollywood, which deepened his career doubts.

Despite these obstacles, Morgan’s career took a positive turn in his late 30s. He secured pivotal roles on ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and ‘Weeds.’ These roles marked a significant shift, helping Morgan finally break through after years of perseverance.

Currently, Morgan stars in ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ alongside Lauren Cohan. This series, where he plays Negan, showcases his ongoing success as both an actor and an executive producer.
