Latino voters are moving away from former President Donald Trump and Republicans before the midterm elections. This information comes from a recent poll conducted by NBC News and Telemundo, which surveyed 800 registered Latino voters in the U.S. from September 21-28.
The poll found that 69% of Latino voters disapprove of Trump’s performance, while 27% approve. Additionally, about 66% believe Trump’s deportation policies have gone too far. Furthermore, 75% of respondents think Trump has not managed the economy and cost of living effectively.
Despite the GOP’s gains with Latino voters in 2024, Democrats hold a significant lead among this group. When asked which party they prefer to control Congress, 59% chose Democrats, and 35% opted for Republicans. In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Democrats have a 12-point advantage over Republicans, indicating some loss of ground by Trump and the GOP among Latino voters.
Historically, the GOP has witnessed a substantial improvement in support from Latino voters. In 2016, only 21% supported a GOP Congress, rising to 26% in 2018. However, current trends show Democrats leading.
The poll, conducted via phone interviews and online surveys, has a margin of error of 3.5%.
Trump addressed a rally in Dayton, Ohio, critiquing the polling data. He argued that the polls fail to consider his influence on the elections, stating, “These fake polls, they don’t account for one thing. They don’t account for the fact that Trump is out campaigning.”
Predictions for the House of Representatives show Democrats may secure 215 seats compared to 201 for the GOP. To gain a majority, Democrats need three more victories from the 19 toss-up races, while Republicans need at least 17 wins.
