Jim Nantz Discusses Tony Romo’s Future After Arrest

Jim Nantz, the leading play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports, commented on Tony Romo’s recent OWI arrest and its impact on their partnership in the broadcast booth for the upcoming NFL season. Since Romo, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, joined CBS Sports with a significant 10-year contract, he has been a key NFL analyst alongside Nantz.

During the “NFL on CBS” Media Day, Nantz was asked if he had been briefed by CBS Sports about Romo’s status for the NFL season.

“I really was just laying low,” Nantz explained. “I had golf events to attend, and I knew there was much to assess. I decided to communicate with Tony, which we did, back and forth. My focus remained on the responsibilities at hand, and that’s what I’ve done.”

Romo was arrested by Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Wisconsin after displaying signs of impairment following a golf event. He faced charges of operating while intoxicated, possessing an open alcohol container in his vehicle, and unsafe passing.

The President of CBS Sports, during the same media event, described Romo’s situation as evolving, noting, “We are still assessing. The impact on our image and brand is vital. We must emphasize our broadcast quality and not be sidetracked by other issues.” The president also noted the team’s depth, which allows them to adapt efficiently.

CBS Sports has announced J.J. Watt, a legend of the Houston Texans, as Romo’s temporary replacement alongside Nantz. Despite this change, Nantz expressed his enduring friendship with Romo.

“Tony is a great friend,” Nantz shared. “We go back to 2011. He attended my wedding, marking a friendship that started long before our booth partnership began in 2017. I am fond of his family. Our discussions will remain private as that feels appropriate.”

Romo is currently in the midst of a 10-year, $180 million contract as CBS’s lead NFL analyst, with $72 million still reportedly owed. Concerns about his future with CBS emerged even before his arrest, with doubts about his lead analyst role after 2026.

Critics have recently questioned his preparation and the chemistry with Nantz. Romo’s contract includes a morals clause that CBS might use, though Romo’s legal team would likely contest any such action due to the substantial amount still owed.

His court hearing is set for September 21, eight days after CBS Sports airs its first NFL game with Nantz and Watt. CBS will also host the Super Bowl in 2028, adding to the stakes of this situation.
