New York Knicks player Josh Hart recognized vulnerability in the San Antonio Spurs before they met in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. At 31, Hart pinpointed the issue during the Spurs’ celebration after their Western Conference Finals victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The moment came when Victor Wembanyama, a key player, was moved to tears following their win.
Hart discussed the emotional scene during an episode of “The Roommates Show” with teammate Jalen Brunson at Madison Square Garden. He noted how everyone highlighted the challenge of beating OKC, suggesting the Spurs might have felt their mission was complete after ousting the reigning champions.
“They beat OKC. For a young team, I feel like that was the mountaintop for them,” Hart said. He viewed their emotional reaction as a sign of overconfidence.
Hart contrasted the Spurs’ celebrations with the Knicks’ approach after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers to reach their first NBA Finals since 1999. The Knicks saw the Eastern Conference win as a stepping stone, keeping focus on their ultimate goal.
The Knicks showed resilience throughout the finals, with the Spurs blowing double-digit leads in all losses. The Knicks orchestrated three of the five largest comebacks in NBA Finals history during this series.
Knicks’ celebrations began only after winning Game 5 against the Spurs. The team maintained a mindset of the series being “0-0” after each game, demonstrating sustained focus.
In the finals, Hart delivered strong defense and effective facilitation on offense. Across 19 playoff games, he averaged 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
