Baseball often seems far from a contact sport, but Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. experienced otherwise in their 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees. During the bottom of the sixth inning at the Rogers Centre, a chaotic sequence led to Guerrero taking a knee to the head.
The Chaotic Play
The Blue Jays were behind 1-0 with runners on first and second, one out, and George Springer stepped up to bat. Nathan Lukes occupied second, while Guerrero was on first.
Springer hit a weak ground ball to third baseman Ryan McMahon, who managed to retire Lukes by stepping on third base. However, while attempting a double play, McMahon’s throw to first ended up in the dirt. First baseman Luis Garcia Jr. couldn’t secure the catch, leading to further chaos.
Guerrero, seizing the chance, sprinted toward third. Garcia retrieved the ball and launched it to third base, but with no Yankee covering the bag, the ball ended in foul territory. Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr., in an attempt to recover, collided with Guerrero, inadvertently kneeing him in the head.
Despite the impact, Guerrero managed to score, tying the game at 1-1. Teammates assisted him to the dugout, and he exited the game following the collision.
Post-Game Reactions
Manager John Schneider commented, “He had a bit of a headache. We’re being cautious and will assess his condition tomorrow.” McMahon and Garcia received errors for the play, and McMahon acknowledged, “It just didn’t work out. It led to some runs for them, which hurts.”
Guerrero has experienced a challenging season, holding a batting average of .263 with seven home runs and 46 RBIs. This is despite his past performance of hitting at least 23 home runs in every full season of his career. His absence from the lineup would affect the Blue Jays’ pursuit of the American League’s third Wild-Card spot.
The Blue Jays, with a 60-64 record, plan to face the Yankees (68-54) in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 3:07 p.m. ET. They hope to have their star first baseman back on the field.
