Jury Deliberations Continue in Lindsay Clancy Murder Case

1 month ago 0

The jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial resumed deliberations on Wednesday in Massachusetts. This marks the fifth day of discussions. Last Tuesday, the jury reported they were deadlocked.

The 12 jurors, consisting of nine women and three men, have deliberated for roughly 25 hours. They received the case in Plymouth Superior Court last Thursday. On Tuesday morning, a note sent to Judge William Sullivan indicated they were “unable to come to a unanimous decision.” However, the judge instructed them to continue deliberating.

Clancy faces charges for the first-degree murders of her three children – 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. The tragedy occurred at their home in Duxbury on January 24, 2023.

Jury Options

Jurors have five possible verdicts: not guilty by reason of insanity, not guilty, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter. A hung jury could lead to a mistrial. This has happened twice recently in Massachusetts. The cases involved Emanuel Lopes in 2023 and Karen Read in 2024.

Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, argues she was not criminally responsible due to overmedication and postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors contend she premeditated the killings and understood her actions when she strangled her children.

“The jury’s deliberations remain unknown to us,” said WBZ-TV legal analyst Jennifer Roman. “They may have made a decision on insanity but can’t settle on the charge, or vice-versa. We simply don’t know their current stance.”

Reddington has criticized Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz for pursuing first-degree murder charges. This approach necessitates a jury trial. A second-degree murder charge might have allowed for a plea deal, giving the judge authority to decide the case.

WBZ-TV’s Penny Kmitt questioned Reddington about the possibility of another trial for Clancy. “Generally, I don’t share my conversations with clients,” remarked Reddington as he faced a throng of reporters and photographers outside the court on Wednesday morning.

Incident Outside Court

On Tuesday, a woman named Dawn Light was arrested outside the courthouse. The 56-year-old from Sutton, Massachusetts stands accused of filming jurors as they exited court. Light appeared in Plymouth Superior Court on Wednesday, charged with juror intimidation. She pleaded not guilty. Her lawyer stated Light intended to photograph Clancy, not videotape jurors. She was released, committing to return to court on October 15.

If the jury convicts Clancy of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter, prison awaits her. Alternatively, a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity would mandate her continued stay at Tewksbury State Hospital. Periodic reviews of her case will follow.
