1 month ago 0

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recounted a humorous exchange with fellow Justice Samuel Alito about their time at Yale Law School. Despite attending the prestigious institution simultaneously, they were never friends. When questioned, Justice Alito amusingly remarked to Thomas that he found him ‘scary.’

In an interview conducted by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Thomas and Cruz engaged in discussions covering race, politics, and other pertinent topics. The dialogue was part of the ‘Verdict with Ted Cruz’ podcast episode aired on Wednesday.

Clarence Thomas commented on the racial challenges and pressures he faced with remarks such as: ‘Stay Black and Die.’

The U.S. Supreme Court associate justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito were present at the inauguration ceremonies held at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on January 20, 2025. This event was captured in photos by Chip Somodevilla from Reuters.

Referring to his colleagues on the Supreme Court, Thomas highlighted that Alito attended the same university but was a year behind him. Cruz interjected during the conversation, stating, ‘He was a year behind you. But you didn’t know each other.’

‘He’s a funny guy. He’s brilliant. He was always nerdy. Princeton guy like you, right?’ Thomas responded.

Thomas recollected asking Alito, ‘Sam, how come we were there two years together? Why weren’t we friends?’ To which Alito replied, ‘Clarence, you were scary.’

Back in law school, Thomas adopted a unique style, dressing in bib overalls and combat boots. Reflecting on those times, he expressed relief that mobile phones capable of taking numerous pictures were not prevalent back then.

On Wednesday’s episode of ‘The Will Cain Show,’ Cruz described Thomas as a former ‘left-wing radical’ before shifting towards conservatism. Reflecting on Thomas’s journey, Cruz noted, ‘He journeyed to become an extraordinary thinker. No other justice has overcome so much adversity to reach the pinnacle of American law.’
