Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office Warns Against Jail Scam Targeting Families

4 weeks ago 0

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has recently alerted the public about a reported scam targeting families of individuals detained in the Kane County jail. Scammers are contacting family members, claiming that a $2,000 retainer fee is needed for an inmate’s release.

Officials emphasize that neither the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office nor the Kane County Sheriff’s Office will ever request direct money transfers from individuals. It is also important to note that Illinois does not practice cash bail.

Even if callers appear to know an inmate’s full name or other personal details, the call is likely fraudulent. Information about individuals in county jail is considered public record, making it accessible to anyone.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant. If you receive a suspicious call or doubt the legitimacy of a request, hang up immediately. You should then contact the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office at 630-232-3500 for verification.
