A renowned Kansas college basketball coach, Brett Ballard, sustained serious injuries after a highway crash on Tuesday night. Ballard, who is the head coach of Washburn University’s basketball team and a former Jayhawks player, was driving a 2024 Ford F-150 when the incident took place.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Ballard had been traveling westbound on Interstate 470 in Topeka at around 8:15 p.m. His pickup truck unexpectedly veered off the roadway’s left side. The vehicle hit a delineator post, went down a steep embankment, and collided with a concrete bridge pillar, causing significant damage to the truck. Ballard was alone in the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Emergency services took him to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for medical treatment.

“We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening,” Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek remarked in a statement. “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men’s basketball program, and all who are affected during this difficult time.”

Brett Ballard is a prominent figure in Kansas basketball history. Hailing from Hutchinson, Ballard played as a guard for the Kansas Jayhawks between 2000 and 2002, under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams. He later served as an assistant coach for Bill Self’s staff for seven years.

Having led the Washburn Ichabods for nine seasons, Ballard has established the team as one of Division II’s strongest competitors. He has achieved a 198-81 overall record, guiding his team to several NCAA Tournament appearances and making the Ichabods a regular contender in the MIAA.

Before his tenure at Washburn, Ballard was the head coach at Baker University. He successfully led the Wildcats to an NAIA national tournament appearance and secured a Heart of America Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

Ballard’s leadership and achievements have earned him respect throughout Kansas’s basketball community. As news of his crash became public, he received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues across Kansas and beyond.

The cause of the crash has not been revealed, as investigations continue to probe the incident’s details.
