Kansas Mother Recovers from Spider Bite Complications

A Kansas mother, Britagne Miller, is recovering from a serious incident involving a suspected spider bite. This unfortunate event required surgery, led to significant infections, and resulted in an extended hospital stay.

Miller, residing in Goddard, was with her family at Cheney Lake on May 28 when she encountered several spiders. Reports from local outlets, including KAKE and FOX Kansas, suggest these spiders crawled on her and bit her.

Four days following the exposure, a bite on Miller’s calf became severely swollen and painful. Miller sought medical attention due to the escalating discomfort. She described the intense pain as akin to being stabbed, with sharp sensations radiating down her leg.

On June 4, Miller was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita and underwent surgery. Existing medical conditions, such as blood-clotting disorders and liver issues, complicated her treatment. Additionally, Miller is allergic to certain medications, further complicating her recovery process.

Her condition worsened, leading to infections and a diagnosis of end-stage liver failure. Doctors informed Miller’s family that her condition was potentially life-threatening. Despite the severity, Miller opted to continue treatment, avoiding hospice care, though she retains limited memory from her intensive care stay.

Miller was discharged from the hospital on July 11. She now continues her recovery at home, requiring home health care, physical therapy, and specialist consultations. Her path to recovery also includes the hope of a liver transplant, for which she is not yet eligible.

The type of spider responsible for the bite remains unconfirmed. Dr. Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist from Kansas State University, explains that venomous spiders such as the brown recluse and black widow are common in Kansas. He advises taking preventive measures like sealing cracks and carefully handling undisturbed items such as boxes and shoes.
