Karmelo Anthony Seeks Funds for Appeal in Austin Metcalf Stabbing Case

Karmelo Anthony Seeks Additional Funding for Appeal

Karmelo Anthony’s family announced they are seeking an additional $250,000 to fund his appeal. This follows an earlier campaign that raised nearly $634,000. The funds faced scrutiny over expenditure transparency. The announcement came during a Dallas news conference, following a judge’s denial of Anthony’s new trial request.

Anthony, aged 19, received a 35-year prison sentence for the murder of Austin Metcalf, aged 17, during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. His appeal requires a lawyer, but he claims financial inability to afford legal representation.

Legal Fund and Appeal Process

The new fund aims to cover legal fees, expert consultations, and appeal-related costs. Russell Wilson, Anthony’s attorney, stated the appeal process might exceed a year, with trial records compiled in October. Subsequently, the Dallas Court of Appeals will review written arguments and may conduct a hearing.

An initial campaign organized by Anthony’s mother targeted $1.4 million, assisting with legal defense, relocation, living expenses, and security. GiveSendGo confirmed lawful fund usage and the campaign’s closure after its goals were met.

Questions Surround Previous Fundraising

A new campaign page indicates donations will go into a Wilson-managed attorney trust account, strictly for legal expenses. At the time of reporting, $30,194 towards the $250,000 goal was raised. Trinicia Ricks created the campaign, with Wilson overseeing fund allocation.

Civil rights activist Dominique Alexander addressed allegations of misused previous funds, labeling them as falsehoods. Alexander refrained from detailing expenses or confirming remaining funds, noting threats prompted earlier funds to aid family relocation.

Karmelo Anthony’s Current Situation

Anthony claims to be financially destitute and unable to hire appeal representation. Records link his parents to business entities in Louisiana and Texas. These records don’t confirm revenue or fundraiser connections, nor have accusations been made against them.

As Anthony remains in custody during the ongoing appeal, Wilson has limited disclosures on defense strategies to preserve future case integrity.
