Ukrainian center and former LSU women’s basketball star Kate Koval has publicly addressed her departure from the team. Koval stepped away from the program in August, with LSU head coach Kim Mulkey citing “personal reasons” for her exit.
On Wednesday, Koval posted a statement on Instagram, confirming that her decision to leave the Tigers was influenced by Mulkey’s recruitment of Russian center Anna Minaeva, aged 17. Koval wrote, “After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the LSU Women’s Basketball program and withdraw from LSU.” She explained that she had planned to return for another season with LSU but was informed about Minaeva’s recruitment shortly after the transfer portal closed in April.
Koval expressed personal ties to the conflict, mentioning her father’s service in the Ukrainian Army and the loss and injuries suffered by friends and family due to “Russian aggression.”
Mulkey stated she aimed to benefit the basketball program by recruiting Minaeva, adding she “cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries.”
Mulkey reportedly hoped Koval and Minaeva could act as “ambassadors” to help build bridges and foster unity in her locker room.
Koval acknowledged the impact of geopolitical tensions on her, her family, and friends, considering whether LSU remains a suitable environment under the circumstances. Although disappointed, Koval expressed her continued desire to play college basketball in the 2026-27 season, hoping for NCAA’s understanding and opportunity to transfer to another college.
OutKick contacted Koval and her representatives, who referred them to her public statement. The statement was released earlier on Thursday.
