Secretary of State Marco Rubio faces significant challenges on his trip to Delhi. His mission is to defuse tensions created by President Trump’s aggressive stance towards India and his efforts to forge closer ties with China.
President Trump’s strategy to build a partnership with China’s Xi Jinping has left Secretary Rubio explaining the President’s vision for Asia to Indian leaders. During a recent visit to Beijing, Mr. Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and a “friend,” suggesting they would continue working closely.
Mr. Trump returned to the U.S. without visiting any other Asian countries. During interviews, he did not offer reassurances to U.S. allies or partners in Asia but mentioned plans to revisit arms sales to Taiwan. This comment raised concerns throughout Asia about American security commitments.
India’s leaders are among those anxious about these developments. They are engaging with Secretary Rubio as Mr. Trump did not visit India to convey his Asian strategy personally. Rubio’s four-day visit to India includes private diplomatic meetings and visits to cultural sites, starting with a stop at Mother Teresa’s charity in Kolkata and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
On behalf of President Trump, Mr. Rubio extended an invitation for Mr. Modi to visit the White House. They discussed enhancing trade and defense cooperation according to a State Department summary.
Having accompanied Mr. Trump in Beijing, Rubio is expected to clarify the administration’s policy for Asia throughout his diplomatic tour. He will meet not only with Indian leaders but also with top diplomats from Japan and Australia. They will gather in Delhi next Tuesday for a meeting of the Quad, a strategic partnership between the four nations.
