On Thursday, a Kenmore Air floatplane made an emergency landing near the Washington coast, bursting into flames and injuring multiple individuals. The incident prompted a major rescue effort, according to authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported the emergency landing and subsequent fire occurred at 5:25 p.m. in North Beach Shallow Bay off Sucia Island. All 10 passengers and the pilot were accounted for.
Emergency Details
The floatplane, a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter, caught fire after landing. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed injuries ranging from head trauma to broken bones and lacerations. Four passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, with one in critical condition. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported at the time.
Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel expressed gratitude that all aboard were accounted for. “Our immediate focus is on ensuring our passengers and pilot receive care and support,” he stated, thanking the U.S. Coast Guard and local responders for their assistance.
Aircraft and Response
The flight took off from Seattle’s Lake Union, heading to Roche Harbor Marina on San Juan Island, a common route for Kenmore Air. In response to the emergency, several agencies, including the U.S. Navy, deployed boats and air ambulance helicopters to help.
San Juan Island, Lopez Island, and Orcas Island Fire & Rescue teams, along with San Juan County Parks, contributed to the rescue. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
