The Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra is facing a challenging period. The principal clarinetist, David Jones, who has been with the orchestra for five presidential terms, describes the feeling as akin to being ‘punched in the chest.’
Jones, 60, has served as the principal clarinetist since 1998, playing a pivotal role in performances for the Washington National Opera, ballet, and theater productions at the Kennedy Center. However, recent circumstances have significantly altered his routine.
Since February, the orchestra has not taken the stage at the Kennedy Center due to a series of cancellations. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts feels empty, similar to a school during summer break. When Jones recently visited, he found new security measures but almost no visitors. His attempts to collect sheet music were unsuccessful due to the absence of the librarian and many familiar faces.
The situation stems from political changes at the Kennedy Center, which traditionally remained nonpartisan. Groups scheduled to perform, including the creative team behind ‘Hamilton,’ opted to boycott following President Trump’s influence over the center. The addition of Trump’s name to the building prompted similar reactions from San Francisco and New York City ballets, leading to further cancellations.
The Washington National Opera also chose to relocate, leading to a significant reduction in performances. These cancellations have had a considerable impact on the orchestra’s members, whose salaries depend on performances. The last full ensemble performance was with the American Ballet Theater back in February.
The Kennedy Center is slated for a two-year closure starting July for renovations, adding uncertainty to an already difficult situation for the orchestra and its 61 musicians.
