Kentucky’s football community is mourning the loss of Nic Smith, a defensive lineman, who passed away at the age of 20. Smith was a redshirt freshman for the Wildcats last season.
Kentucky’s coach, Will Stein, expressed sorrow over Smith’s death saying, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him.” This message was shared on social media platform X.
A university spokesperson reported that campus police responded to a residence hall following a report of a possible body. The university later confirmed Smith’s death. The University of Kentucky Police Department is working alongside the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner, and initial investigations suggest there was no foul play involved.
“This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” Stein further stated.
Smith was studying community leadership and development in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Known affectionately as “Happy” and “Big Happ,” Smith was admired by many.
Nic Smith was actively involved in sports during his high school years at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia, playing both football and basketball.
