Knicks Close in on Championship with Win Over Spurs

The New York Knicks are returning to Madison Square Garden, just two wins away from ending a long-standing championship drought. In a tense finish on Friday night, Jalen Brunson made a crucial free throw, sealing a 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2.

Earlier, Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama missed a crucial jumper which could have tipped the game in favor of San Antonio. Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns contributed significantly with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 20 points. This marks the Knicks’ 13th consecutive win, the second-longest streak in NBA playoff history.

The Knicks’ performance mirrors that of only two other teams; the 1993 Chicago Bulls and the 1995 Houston Rockets, both of which went on to win their respective championships. As the third team to win the first two games of the finals on the road, the Knicks are hoping to achieve similar success and secure their first championship since 1973.

Although Wembanyama had a subdued first half, he rallied to score 29 points, while De’Aaron Fox added 20 for San Antonio. The series now heads to New York, with Game 3 scheduled for Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Spurs fought hard, overcoming a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama’s three-point play gave San Antonio a brief lead, but Brunson soon tied the game with a timely basket. With only 30 seconds remaining, the Knicks regained possession, and Brunson’s subsequent free throw put them ahead for good.

Game 3 begins at 8:30 p.m. Monday in New York.
