Kyle Whittingham Takes On Michigan Coaching Challenge

Kyle Whittingham is set to coach his most significant game this November. After spending 22 seasons leading Utah, Whittingham has transitioned to guiding the Michigan Wolverines. His arrival in Ann Arbor follows the dismissal of Sherrone Moore.

The Wolverines present a fresh set of challenges, with intense rivalries, notably stronger than those in Utah. Among these is the storied rivalry with Ohio State, often regarded as the pinnacle of sports rivalries.

“I haven’t learned really much more than I already knew. It’s a national game. Everybody knows about it. It’s ‘The Game’ as we call it. It’s of great importance to both sides obviously. But I’m an old-school coach. We got 11 games that we play before that, so we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves,”

Whittingham emphasized during Big Ten Media Day, highlighting his focus on each game leading up to the Ohio State showdown.

Whittingham acknowledged the implications of the rivalry, stating, “Make no mistake, I understand the implications that it has… Very well-versed in what it means, the intensity of it, the national allure that it has.” He hopes the season’s final game, the 12th, will determine the Big Ten title.

The history between Michigan and Ohio State adds to the anticipation. The 2024 encounter saw Michigan as underdogs against the second-ranked Buckeyes. After winning in a surprise upset, tensions flared with Michigan players planting their flag at midfield, leading to a skirmish requiring police intervention. Ultimately, Ohio State claimed the national championship. Last November, the Buckeyes ended their four-game losing streak at Michigan’s home field, The Big House.

“But I want to win that game as badly as anybody in Ann Arbor… what better scenario would there be is if that game came down to the championship in the Big Ten? “

Despite not developing a personal animosity towards Ohio State, Whittingham is eager to claim victory. As the rivalry continues to evolve, Whittingham will soon experience its intensity firsthand.
