On this day in 1955, the Guinness Book of World Records was first published. Is there a record for the oldest book of world records? Here’s what’s happening today:
Kennedy Center Hearing
President Trump’s efforts to renovate and name the Kennedy Center after himself return to court today. The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently argued that the center could face financial difficulties without Trump’s name on its facade. The board of the Kennedy Center voted to add inscriptions crediting Trump for renovations and endowments, renaming it the ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza.’ The project, expected to last two years and cost at least $250 million, would shut down most performance venues. Representative Joyce Beatty initially sued for the removal of Trump’s name, filing an emergency motion after the board’s recent vote. The board agreed to delay re-adding Trump’s name until September 8.
ICE Officer Released
An ICE officer, Christian Castro, was released from a Texas jail after being held since late May. Castro is charged with four counts of second-degree assault and falsely reporting a crime, related to an incident in Minnesota. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz sued Texas Governor Greg Abbott for refusing to sign extradition paperwork. A U.S. district judge ruled that Walz’s bid could not yet be considered. Castro was released just before 7 a.m. local time.
Data Center Discussions
President Trump adjusted his position on data centers as midterm elections approach. While previously critical of New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s decision to halt construction of hyperscale data centers, Trump now suggests GOP candidates address the issue as they see fit. This shift follows Republican reservations about AI facilities, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s promise to place restrictions on data centers if elected to the U.S. Senate.
Leavitt’s Departure
Karoline Leavitt’s tenure as White House press secretary ends today. Her successor hasn’t been decided yet, though conservative commentator Scott Jennings is a possible candidate. Trump’s comments about receiving many job applications demonstrate the interest in the role.
Buc-ee’s Expansion Plans
The travel center chain Buc-ee’s plans to expand in conservative, business-friendly states. CEO Arch Aplin III stated the decision comes amidst growth opportunities and a preference for regions with strong workforces.
ATF Cybersecurity Incident
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating a major cybersecurity breach. The ATF quickly disconnected affected systems and is working closely with the Department of Justice. Details about the breach remain limited.
