Laurie Buckhout Faces Penalty Over Prediction Market Trading

1 month ago 0

Laurie Buckhout, a Republican running to flip a Democratic-held congressional district in North Carolina, has been fined and suspended by Kalshi after purchasing contracts related to her own race. Prediction markets have gained popularity, allowing individuals to buy contracts tied to events such as elections. Concerns about ethics have risen as politicians have engaged in insider trading.

Kalshi announced disciplinary action against Buckhout, stating she breached Rule 5.17(z). This rule prevents anyone who influences or decides the outcome of an event from trading on it. Buckhout, an Army veteran and candidate for North Carolina’s 1st District, bought under $1,000 worth of contracts related to her candidacy. She must now pay a $2,589.96 fine and is suspended from Kalshi for three years.

The Compliance Department noted that Buckhout’s candidacy qualified her as a decision maker for the contract, giving her influence over the event’s outcome. Kalshi’s filing stated Buckhout cooperated with the inquiry, accepted the conclusions, and agreed to resolve the issue by paying a fine and accepting trading restrictions.

A statement from Buckhout read, “I bet on myself. It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived.”

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Madison Andrus criticized Buckhout, expressing doubt about her trustworthiness as a representative due to her trading actions.

Competitive North Carolina Race

Buckhout is contesting a competitive district in northeastern North Carolina, currently held by Democrat Don Davis. The district, newly redrawn, favors Republicans more strongly. Despite this, Democrats consider the race competitive and hope Davis can attract centrist Republicans. Davis previously defeated Buckhout even as the district supported Trump.

The political climate seems favorable for Democrats amidst decreasing approval for Trump due to economic issues and foreign policy concerns.

Limited independent polling suggests a close race. Davis led Buckhout by 4 points in an internal poll, while a Republican-sponsored poll showed a tie. The Cook Political Report rates the race as “Leans Republican,” although Sabato’s Crystal Ball deems it a toss-up post-redistricting.

Previous Insider Trading Incidents

Other candidates have faced suspension from Kalshi for insider trading. Matt Klein, Mark Moran, and Ezekiel Enriquez were suspended earlier for similar actions. Additionally, former Representative George Santos was permanently banned from Kalshi and fined $71,356 related to his trades on attendance at a State of the Union address. Santos expressed disdain for Kalshi’s decision in a social media post.
