Legal Ruling Allows Former NFL Player to Resume College Football

4 weeks ago 0

The recent court decision permitting former NFL athlete Dae’Quan Wright to return to college athletics at LSU has attracted attention. Fox News contributor Jim Gray examined the lawsuit initiated by the SEC aimed at obstructing this transition. This case highlights the shifting NCAA eligibility rules affecting the 2022 draft class.

Jayden Daniels had an outstanding performance during his tenure as quarterback for the LSU Tigers, earning numerous accolades, including the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 2023. Despite his achievements, some LSU fans were vocal about their disapproval of Daniels during a recent game against Clemson, which LSU won 51-10.

At Tiger Stadium, an “NFLSU” video played on the jumbotron, showcasing former LSU players now in the NFL. While most players received positive reactions, Daniels faced boos when his name appeared alongside fellow former LSU player K’Lavon Chaisson, now with the Washington Commanders.

The negative response comes after Daniels and his attorney, Adam Kenner, issued a cease-and-desist letter to LSU in August. They demanded that the university cease using Daniels’ name, image, and likeness (NIL) without consent. Kenner’s letter to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry warned against further unauthorized use of Daniels’ NIL.

Daniels, now a quarterback for the Washington Commanders, was instrumental in LSU’s success, but his request for respect from the university led to a contentious dispute. This has potentially impacted his reputation among fans.

While Daniels was known for wearing No. 5 during his LSU years, sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett now bears the same number. Pickett maintains that he has worn this number throughout his career and was promised the jersey upon signing with LSU. Former head coach Brian Kelly, who recruited Pickett and coached Daniels, was recently replaced by Lane Kiffin as head coach in 2026.

There was speculation that after winning the Heisman, Daniels’ No. 5 jersey might be retired by LSU. However, the Tigers have a policy of waiting five years before discussing such decisions. Daniels believed LSU should have consulted him before allowing another player to wear No. 5, citing the precedent set by Joe Burrow, whose No. 9 jersey hasn’t been reassigned since his departure to the NFL.
