Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth emerged victorious in the Republican gubernatorial primary. She will now compete against the Democratic candidate in the upcoming election to succeed Gov. Tim Walz.
Demuth’s triumph highlights her resilience, as she remained in the race following her loss of the Republican Party endorsement to Kendall Qualls at the state convention. Qualls gained the endorsement after 10 ballots, but Demuth contended that her legislative experience and leadership of House Republicans positioned her as the party’s most formidable contender for November.
In the primary, Demuth also defeated MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, adding to her achievement. Minnesota has not seen a Republican win a statewide election since 2006, when Gov. Tim Pawlenty narrowly secured reelection, marking a challenging 18-year period for the party.

In January, the race took a pivotal shift when Walz decided to withdraw from running for a third term. He stated his intention to focus his final year on addressing fraud within state programs instead of defending his political position. Walz had initially committed to reelection, but intense scrutiny over allegations of fraud in government-funded programs became a substantial political hurdle.
Critics argued that his administration mishandled these issues, with prosecutors estimating fraudulent activities could amount to over $9 billion. This had become a focal point for Republican attacks.
Once a national figure after serving as vice presidential running mate to Kamala Harris in 2024, Walz stepped back, shifting the dynamics of Minnesota politics significantly.
With Walz stepping aside, attention turned to Amy Klobuchar as a possible successor. She entered the race, transforming the dynamic from a referendum on Walz’s governance to a direct contest against a seasoned Minnesota politician.
