Lollapalooza Commemoration of Civil Rights March

Heavy rains on the third morning of Lollapalooza did not deter the crowds heading to Marquette Park on Saturday. They followed the path that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had walked 60 years ago. Though the mobs of 1966 are gone, civil rights advocates believe their calls for justice remain unchanged. Amir Hamid, a young child held by his father Samir, joined the rally at Marquette Park on August 1, 2026, in Chicago. The event was organized to mark the 60th anniversary of King’s civil rights efforts in the city.

The rally and a march honored the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the fight against segregation, racial injustice, and systemic inequality. said Rev. Bernice King. She joined other leaders to remind everyone that the struggle for human dignity continues, echoing her father’s mission.

Gathering began at the intersection of 63rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue at 9 a.m. Attendees sheltered under colorful umbrellas, cheering and singing liberation songs. The event featured speeches and performances that highlighted ongoing issues, including immigration enforcement impacting local communities.

Alejandra Villa-Moges, a resident affected by immigration raids, expressed her hope inspired by the gathering’s energy. Beth Wallace shared concerns over racism and committed to continuing attending demonstrations.

The march through the streets saw shop owners and residents cheering from doorways and windows. Joy Reid, noted political commentator, emphasized honoring King’s legacy by persevering even in inclement weather.

Criticism of President Trump’s administration included commentary from speakers denouncing the impact on democracy. Mayor Brandon Johnson assured continued support for neglected communities.

The event concluded with musical performances, including Chicago native artist Common, uplifting the crowd. Attendees like Titus Bryant felt empowered standing where King once marched.
