The Los Angeles Chargers had high expectations for the start of the NFL season, with matches against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders seeming winnable on paper. However, those expectations were unmet, resulting in a disappointing 0-2 start.
The Chargers’ defense has struggled, allowing 26 points in each of the first two games while the team only managed to score 14 points per game. This has raised concerns about the defensive performance, as it has given up an average of 349 yards per game with only one takeaway.
“We got to look each other in the eye, man, and just tell the truth and just get better,” said Pro Bowl safety Derwin James Jr. after breaking his left pinky finger. “Because, right now, that stuff just looks trash. … I’m angry, but being angry doesn’t fix anything. Being angry doesn’t fix the problem that we have.”
Despite his injuries, James has been active on the field with 17 tackles and a pass breakup over the two games. However, he emphasized the need for the entire team to improve their performance.
Starting the season 0-2 poses significant challenges. Historical data from OPTA Stats highlights this issue. The Chargers are only the second team in NFL history to lose consecutive games by double digits at home, following the 1926 Racine Tornadoes, who folded shortly after their losing streak.
The Chargers now face a tough road ahead. They will visit the Buffalo Bills in Week 3 and then travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks in Week 4. Improvement is necessary for the team to salvage the remainder of the season.
