The Los Angeles Chargers are having a rough start to the NFL season. They remain winless after three games and have suffered significant defeats against the Cardinals and Raiders. Both opponents had only six wins combined last season, highlighting the Chargers’ struggles.
The latest setback was a 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Chargers appeared in control, forcing five turnovers, but the offense failed to capitalize. They led 13-10 in the fourth quarter but could not convert drives into touchdowns, settling for field goals. This allowed Buffalo to stage a comeback with Josh Allen leading two scoring drives in the final quarter. Quarterback Justin Herbert struggled, looking inefficient and indecisive during crucial moments.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his concerns about Herbert’s performance. He urged Herbert to improve decision-making, stressing that it is a collective effort involving the team’s coaching staff, including coordinator Mike McDaniel.
Herbert, the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, quickly became one of the league’s top quarterbacks. He earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year and had a standout second season, throwing 5,014 yards, 38 touchdowns, and completing 65.9% of his passes. Though he achieved a second Pro Bowl nomination last season, he has not led the team past the first playoff round.
This season presents new challenges. Herbert has completed 627 passing yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions over three games, hitting a career-low 59.1% completion rate. His past achievements now face scrutiny as the team has yet to secure a win.
The Chargers face a strenuous upcoming schedule. They will travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks, followed by matches against the Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, and Ravens.
