Los Angeles Lakers Focus on Defense in Luka Doncic Era

The Los Angeles Lakers have entered a new chapter with Luka Doncic as the focal point, and initial impressions from training camp suggest a promising start. For the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Lakers will begin without LeBron James. This shift offered the opportunity to build a new team foundation, prioritizing defense rather than seeking another superstar.

Instead of adding a replacement for James, the Lakers surrounded Doncic and Austin Reaves with players ready to tackle defensive responsibilities. Early in the training camp, this focus on defense is already evident.

Reaves highlighted the contributions of Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, and Adou Thiero, noting their strong defensive skills. With 7-foot-2 center Walker Kessler guarding the rim, scoring against the Lakers’ lineup poses a significant challenge. “Scoring on Matisse and Ziaire, along with Adou, is tough,” Reaves stated. “Having Walker as a last line of defense compounds the difficulty.”

Reaves believes these additions are crucial to the Lakers’ championship aspirations. “Defensively, we’ll be significantly better,” he remarked. “These players compete consistently, and everyone else complements by fulfilling their roles properly.” Comments like these inspire confidence among Lakers fans eager to believe in the revamped roster.

Doncic remains the central figure in this transformation. The five-time All-Star led the Lakers to 53 victories during his first full season, securing his second NBA scoring title and a first-team All-NBA selection. However, succeeding with Doncic requires more than offensive talent.

Last season, the Lakers ranked 20th in defensive efficiency and tied for 22nd in blocked shots. Their rebounding performance was near the league’s bottom. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Lakers prioritized defense and size during the offseason.

The front office responded with decisive moves, acquiring Kessler via sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz, and bringing in perimeter defenders like Thybulle and Quentin Grimes. Adding Williams further expanded options for head coach JJ Redick, providing flexibility around Doncic and Reaves.

Kessler stands out as a crucial acquisition. Known as one of the NBA’s finest rim protectors, Kessler has ranked among the top five in blocked shots for three consecutive seasons. His presence boosts the Lakers’ perimeter defense, allowing aggression from defenders upfront.

“We’re set to be a robust defensive team,” Kessler expressed. “Our perimeter defense will astonish many observers.” This defensive enhancement aligns with maximizing Doncic’s capabilities.

For the Lakers, it’s not about taking the ball from Doncic, but about providing defensive support, rebounding prowess, and turnover opportunities to facilitate his offensive play. Kessler acknowledges how firm perimeter defenders simplify his tasks. “When those guys can force turnovers or recover swiftly, blocking shots becomes easier,” he observed.

The defensive impact was evident as practices turned intense. Redick noted how the first two days showed heightened physicality, especially with Thybulle’s seven-steal performance.

While training camp progress doesn’t ensure top defensive rankings in the league, it does underline the Lakers’ strategic direction. With James’ departure, the focus is clear—build around Doncic’s strengths. Offensively, the strategy includes providing shooters and secondary creators. Defensively, it requires athletes capable of handling tough tasks.

The effectiveness of this approach will reveal itself as the season unfolds. Yet, early insights from Reaves suggest a promising defensive potential. If this identity extends into the regular season, the Lakers may have discovered the perfect environment for Doncic to thrive.
