55 minutes ago 0

During a heated mayoral debate, Councilmember Nithya Raman criticized Mayor Karen Bass, calling her an “MIA” mayor and stating that Angelenos cannot afford more years of decline and mismanagement. Raman emphasized the city’s rising homelessness, demanding more action.

Bass defended her record, highlighting her long career in public service, her efforts against the Trump administration, and addressing the city’s homelessness crisis. She questioned Raman’s past votes against removing encampments near schools and hiring more police officers, asserting it risks destabilizing the city 640 days before a major sporting event.

Addressing ‘Problem Properties’

Moderator Alejandra Ortiz questioned candidates on slow responses to problem properties such as a fire-ravaged historic Black church. Raman criticized city departments for inefficient communication and promised to enhance coordination and enforcement if elected. Bass acknowledged issues, noting her attempt to allocate $2 million to expedite property clearage, which was removed by the council.

Film Industry Job Retention

Both candidates offered solutions to keep film jobs in Los Angeles. Bass appointed a film czar to streamline permits and reduce fees, while Raman supported unlimited tax credits to encourage local productions.

Immigration Advocacy

Raman criticized Bass for not funding Represent LA, a program aiding undocumented immigrants. Bass clarified resources could come from philanthropy and affirmed her opposition to ICE raids.

‘Mansion Tax’ and Affordable Housing

The debate also broached Measure ULA’s impact on apartment development. While Raman sought reforms to exclude new apartments from this tax, Bass emphasized affordable housing construction and state-level legislative efforts.

Handling Disasters and Fire Department Funding

Bass apologized for absence during the Palisades fire, stating improvements were made since with a new fire chief implementing most review recommendations. Both candidates supported Measure FD, a sales tax increase to fund the Fire Department.

Automatic License Plate Readers and Surveillance Concerns

On surveillance, Raman expressed skepticism over data privacy with automatic license plate readers. Bass believed they aid crime prevention but opposed Flock Safety’s data-sharing practices.

Homelessness Initiatives and Law Enforcement

Bass highlighted the Inside Safe program for housing thousands, despite high recidivism. Raman questioned its cost-effectiveness, pledging to solve homelessness by 2030. They clashed over the necessity and impact of policing strategies.

Election Stakes

Bass portrayed Raman as a risky choice due to her voting record, while Raman pledged transformative change if elected. With a substantial number of undecided voters, the election remains volatile.
