A large-scale search is active in Virginia for a suspect described as “armed and extremely dangerous” who allegedly attacked two deputies, resulting in one death and one injury.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Logan Utt, 31, lost his life in the attack. The Carroll County Sheriff, Kevin Kemp, confirmed his death. Michael Puckett is suspected of the shooting and is the subject of a search with a $10,000 reward offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to his capture.

The incident occurred before 9:30 p.m. when two deputies visited a home for a welfare check requested by a family member. Upon arrival, Puckett allegedly shot at the deputies, killing Utt and injuring the second officer. The injured deputy survived due to his ballistic vest. Although Puckett was shot at by the officers, he managed to escape and remains missing.

Authorities, including the Virginia State Police, are actively searching for Puckett. The public is advised not to approach him and to call 911 if he is seen.

Deputy Utt joined the force in 2023, having previously served as a military veteran. His dedication to his community was noted by Sheriff Kemp, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Utt, calling him a hero. Utt leaves behind his wife and children.

The injured deputy is reported to be stable. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger stated her office is monitoring the situation closely. She urged anyone with information about Puckett’s whereabouts to contact the authorities. In her statement, she acknowledged Utt’s bravery and committed to supporting his family and the injured officer.

The Virginia State Police are leading the investigation into this incident.
