Jordan Spieth Concerns Over Impact of Sports Betting on Golf

1 hour ago 0

Jordan Spieth recently expressed his concerns about the influence of sports betting on golf fan behavior. Speaking before the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Illinois, Spieth commented on increasingly rowdy golf crowds following events like Wyndham Clark’s experience at the U.S. Open.

“I do think that betting in golf is something that’s going to have to be tackled here soon,” Spieth stated. He suggested that the availability of betting might lead to disruptive fan actions.

He pointed out that golf’s nature allows fan interference, making it unique among sports. “In golf, you could actually impact the outcome if you wanted to,” Spieth explained, noting the potential for significant influence if fans have a financial stake in the game’s outcome.

The growing connection between betting and golf fan behavior, Spieth suggested, has become more noticeable in the last five years. This period coincides with the proliferation of legalized sports gambling, now permitted in 39 states since 2018. Illinois, where Spieth was speaking, also allows online betting.

While fan vitriol isn’t new, Spieth emphasized its link to betting. He mentioned his previous association as an ambassador for FanDuel, highlighting his insight into the betting industry’s influence on sports.

Recent incidents, like the fan behavior at Shinnecock Hills during Clark’s play, have sparked further debate. Criticism has extended to Long Island fans after controversial episodes at the Ryder Cup, leading to discussions about the appropriateness of hosting future major golf events in such areas.

Spieth’s remarks reflect a broader concern about maintaining sports integrity as betting becomes a widespread part of the experience for both fans and players.
