4 weeks ago 0

A former aide from the Biden administration emerged victorious in a competitive primary race in Massachusetts. This win paves the way for Dan Koh to potentially secure a seat in the House of Representatives this November.

In a race involving six candidates, Koh won the chance to replace Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who concluded his House career following an unsuccessful campaign against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., which wrapped up Tuesday night.

Dan Koh received support from ex-President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, reflecting his time working in the White House. He served as chief of staff to then-Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and later as a deputy assistant to President Biden and deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Though successful in this primary, Koh is no stranger to congressional campaigns. He narrowly lost the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District in 2018 to Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass.

Koh advocates for progressive changes such as dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement and pursuing universal healthcare. He is now set to take Moulton’s place in the 6th Congressional District, a region in northeastern Massachusetts regarded as reliably Democratic.

Since 2015, Seth Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran, has represented the district. His Senate campaign faced a contentious primary against Markey, an 80-year-old progressive with tenure since 2013. Moulton’s platform focused on generational change, arguing Markey had not significantly improved the state’s condition. However, these arguments failed to unseat Markey on Tuesday.

Howard Koh, Dan’s father, was an assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services during Barack Obama’s presidency. His uncle held administrative positions under Obama and Clinton.

Koh now faces Republican military veteran Micah Jones in the upcoming general election, with Jones running unopposed in his primary.
