Protests have disrupted numerous high schools across France, marking what a student union describes as a significant event. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne reported that approximately 2,000 high schools were immobilized while all universities joined the movement. The protests involve students, parents, and teachers demanding government action on inadequate school conditions.
The demonstrations have persisted into their third week. Protesters demand that the government address issues with underfunded and dilapidated schools. In some schools, protesters noted failing infrastructures such as collapsing ceilings and water-damaged walls. One protester highlighted the disrepair and rodent problems in high schools in Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris.
Clashes between protesters and law enforcement have resulted in arrests and property damage. Over 5,000 individuals have been detained, including more than 4,000 teenagers, according to police reports. In Bordeaux, student and union members marched holding signs and chanting against the state of schools.
Authorities used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse crowds, leading to dramatic footage of protesters fleeing from the officers. A grave incident occurred when a 15-year-old lost a hand after picking up a police grenade in Lens. This was identified as a sting-ball grenade used by riot police.
Another incident last week involved a 14-year-old in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône suffering a jaw fracture from a tear gas shell. Investigations into both events are underway, as announced by local officials.
With the presidential elections approaching, the government has not provided significant responses to the demands of protesters. A protester expressed determination to continue demonstrations, stating, “I’ll make noise as long as I’m not getting a response.”
