Mauricio Pochettino Extends Contract as U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team Coach Through 2030

2 weeks ago 0

Mauricio Pochettino has committed to leading the U.S. Soccer men’s national team through the 2030 World Cup, officials announced on Monday. This decision comes shortly after Pochettino guided the U.S. to the round of 16 during the 2026 World Cup, hosted on American soil.

“Mauricio and his team see the potential in U.S. soccer,” stated JT Batson, CEO and Secretary General of U.S. Soccer. “Our new project enables us to build on the USMNT’s progress. We aim to compete at the highest levels and make soccer the country’s most-played sport. Mauricio’s commitment is crucial to achieving these goals.”

Pochettino, aged 54, previously coached high-profile clubs such as Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. His tenure with the U.S. team, which began in 2024, marks his first experience coaching a national team. By the 2026 World Cup, he had a 15-10-1 record. Under his leadership, the team won its group and achieved a new record for goals scored. The U.S. advanced past Bosnia-Herzegovina in the round of 32 but fell to Belgium in the round of 16 in a 4-1 loss.

Following the tournament, Pochettino expressed appreciation for the supportive relationship with U.S. Soccer leadership. Despite his Argentine roots, he forged a connection with U.S. fans by embracing the team’s anthem, John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

The new contract retains a respected figure at the helm, with hopes of continued improvement. Pochettino noted the team’s progress over a year, remarking on turning around from a challenging state after the 2025 Gold Cup. “I am proud because in one year, this team demonstrated that we can compete,” Pochettino said in July.

While specific terms of the new contract have not been disclosed, Pochettino’s initial agreement was valued at approximately $6 million annually. U.S. Soccer assembled private investors, including Ken Griffin, to fund the deal and entice Pochettino from club roles in 2024.

This story is evolving. Stay tuned for further updates.
