The Chicago White Sox secured a victory over the Cleveland Guardians with a 2-1 score on Tuesday, capturing sole possession of first place in the American League Central standings.
Randal Grichuk’s double set up Colson Montgomery to drive him home with a single in the second inning. In the sixth, Miguel Vargas hit a solo homer, which proved to be critical, as it was the third and final hit for the Sox in the game. These hits were backed by solid pitching to clinch the win.
Strong Pitching Performance
Sean Burke played a major role on the mound, allowing one run over 6 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits, struck out six, and walked one. Burke focused on pitching aggressively to keep his pitch count at 90, even as he navigated the game’s challenges.
Sean Newcomb relieved Burke, closing the game with 2 2/3 hitless innings. Newcomb was efficient, striking out two and walking one, securing his second save of the season. His performance was critical in maintaining the narrow lead.
Cleveland’s Only Run
Kahlil Watson’s solo home run in the fifth inning was Cleveland’s only score. Guardians starter Parker Messick was impressive over 7 2/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits, striking out ten, and walking just one.
Although the Sox struggled early, Grichuk broke through with a double in the fourth, followed by Montgomery’s timely single. Watson’s home run tied the game, but Vargas restored the lead with a home run in the sixth.
Team Reactions
Manager Will Venable praised both the hitting and the pitching: “Starting with Colson driving that ball through, and Vargas put a good swing for the homer. It was just enough tonight.”
Vargas’ homer was his 17th of the season. “I’m trying to compete and get on base,” he said. “It means a lot to be in first place, especially at home where the atmosphere is electric.”
The win marked the ninth consecutive home series victory for the White Sox, now 41-37. The Sox have emphasized the importance of maintaining their momentum even after tough road trips.
